Mini Review: "Midnights"

The first story in My True Love Gave to Me, "Midnights," is by the wonderfully talented Rainbow Rowell.  I'm sure by now you all know that I love Rainbow Rowell, and that I would probably read her grocery list. I was so excited when I found out that she had penned a short story for this anthology.

I absolutely loved Rainbow's short story. First of all, it's written beautifully, and the sentences just flow together. It's almost as if it's a symphony, but instead of music, its melody is made up of beautiful sentences.

I thought Rainbow's story about the midnight hour on multiple New Year's Eves was an absolutely adorable story. It takes place over the course of a few years, but I never felt like it was rushed. The story is also one of unrequited love that grows into full-blown love. She makes the romance between Mags and Noel a slow-simmering one in such a short story, and I was amazed by this. In just a few pages, Rainbow makes you fall in love with her characters in a way that you understand exactly what they are going through on each New Year's Eve.

"Midnights" is one of my favorite stories in the anthology, and I can see myself rereading this one for years to come.

Rainbow Rowell writes books. Sometimes she writes about adults (ATTACHMENTS and LANDLINE). Sometimes she writes about teenagers (ELEANOR & PARK and FANGIRL). But she always writes about people who talk a lot. And people who feel like they're screwing up. And people who fall in love.
When she's not writing, Rainbow is reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing about things that don't really matter in the big scheme of things.
She lives in Nebraska with her husband and two sons.
